چکیده

We model the interaction of the supernova SN 1995G with a dense circum-stellar (CS) gas in a thin shell approximation. A model fit of the observed bolometric light curve combined with data on the supernova expansion velocity provides an estimate of the density of the CS shell, its mass (≈ 1 M ⊙), and age (≈ 8 years). It is shown that the derived CS gas density does not depend on the assumed mass of the supernova envelope. This results from the high CS density, which ensures that the forward shock wave is essentially radiative. The derived CS density is consistent with the Hα luminosity and with the presence of the apparent effect of Thomson scattering in the red wing of this line. The mass of the CS envelope together with its expansion velocity indicates that the CS envelope was ejected as a result of violent energy release (∼ 6 × 10 48 erg) eight years before the supernova outburst.

YOUNG AND MASSIVE BINARY PROGENITORS OF TYPE Ia SUPERNOVAE AND THEIR CIRCUMSTELLAR MATTER

We present new evolutionary models for Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors, where we include massstripping effect on a main-sequence (MS) or slightly evolved companion star by winds from a mass-accreting white dwarf (WD). The mass-stripping attenuates the rate of mass transfer from the companion to the WD. As a result, quite a massive MS companion can avoid forming a common envelope to increa...

The Rise of the Remarkable Type IIn Supernova SN 2009ip

Recent observations by Mauerhan et al. have shown the unprecedented transition of the previously identified luminous blue variable (LBV) and supernova impostor SN 2009ip to a real Type IIn supernova (SN) explosion. We present high-cadence optical imaging of SN 2009ip obtained between 2012 UT Sep. 23.6 and Oct. 9.6, using 0.3 − 0.4 meter aperture telescopes from the Coral Towers Observatory in C...

RED SUPERGIANTS AS POTENTIAL TYPE IIn SUPERNOVA PROGENITORS: SPATIALLY RESOLVED 4.6 μm CO EMISSION AROUND VY CMa AND BETELGEUSE

We present high-resolution 4.6 μm CO spectra of the circumstellar environments of two red supergiants (RSGs) that are potential supernova (SN) progenitors: Betelgeuse and VY Canis Majoris. Around Betelgeuse, CO emission within ±3 (±12 km s) follows a mildly clumpy but otherwise spherical shell, smaller than its ∼55 shell in K i λ7699. In stark contrast, 4.6 μm CO emission around VY CMa is coinc...

SPECTRAL EVOLUTION OF THE EXTRAORDINARY TYPE IIn SUPERNOVA 2006gy

We present a detailed analysis of the extremely luminous and long-lasting Type IIn supernova (SN) 2006gy using spectra obtained between days 36 and 237 after explosion. We derive the temporal evolution of the effective temperature, radius, blast-wave and SN-ejecta expansion speeds, and bolometric luminosity, as well as the progenitor wind density and total swept-up mass overtaken by the shock. ...

Discovery of the Extremely Energetic Supernova 2008fz

We report the discovery and initial observations of the energetic type-IIn supernova (SN), 2008fz possibly the most energetic SN ever discovered. This event, like the similarly luminous type-IIn SN 2006gy, exhibits a smooth very slowly evolving light curve. As is characteristic of type-IIn SN, the early spectra of 2008fz initially exhibited narrow Balmer lines which were replaced by a broader c...
